I was going to change belts today in my "83 with a 6.2 and have no problem wit the altenator(have done in the dark on the side of the freeway) but i have never been able to change to power steering belt. When i loosen the boltsthe pumpand resivor should push down to take the tension off but the power steering lines are between the pump and the frame so it has no where to go. I shouldn't have to disconnect those lines? Does this sound familier to any body else? If not i am asuming a previous owner rigged it this way. As always any help is appriciated

Tony,
I can tell you that unless you have changed one on the 6.2 before, you are probably not getting at all the bolts on your unit. Due to the extra vibrations associated with the diesel, GM added some extra fasteners here and there. A few of them hold on the steering pump. One of them is under the pump and is quite hard to see and get too. Take a real good look, (crawl undernieth) you'll figure it out!

davy's right that bottom bolt in the back can be hell to see and worse to get at.

do you have to take the pump completly off or just loosen it and rotate it?

There are four bolts holding the power steering pump. One of them on the water pump has a round hole for rotation while the other three are slotted. One of the slotted ones is on the water pump, one on the a/c bracket (if you have one), and one just inside the frame rail below the pump. Its bracket attaches to the block not too far in front of the motor mount. You should be able to get a 15mm box end wrench or socket on that one from below, but it can be a bugger. I've found that I have to get them all pretty loose because the pump will tend to bind with this many. I use a bar clamp to suck the pump bracket upward then tighten the bolts. This gets the belt tight. Good luck.
