View Full Version : I P Replacement

I started my job by attempting to replace a leaky head gasket prior to installing a set of Stan headers. Took the head in and valves were so far out of tolerance , I pulled the other side off and will have them done as well. Anyhow, I wanted to upgrade my IP. Its about 7 years without being touched. Its a DB2 - 29 -4441. Does removing the IP just consist of pulling the 2 bolts @ the rear of the pump and she comes out? I can understand the various wires and cables. I guess some of the things I have read here just have me nerved up a little bit about messing with the IP. Ok, so if I take it off how do I know what to upgrade to? I have built my own Swanger air unit, increased the exhaust, redone the heads, and with the help of the pictures provided by another member feel like I can tackle the DSG timing gear replacement. I will have my injectors pop tested but if I upgrade my pump wouldn't I have to upgrade injectors as well?

If your current IP is working fine, I'd leave it alone, but maybe turn up the fuel on it after you get your upgrades done.

There's three nuts that hold the IP on. I wouldn't mess with it either if it's working pretty good. If'n you do take it out, slide it backward carefully without moving anything and noting exactly at what angle the key/pin is located so you can install the replacement easily.

How many miles on the IP? If it's >100-125K miles, you may consider installing a rebuilt as a form of reliability insurance.

Also, take note of the timing marks and/or scribe a line there before loosening the three IP nuts in order to not loose your current timing setting.
