Anyone using a gear reduction starter in place of stock? I've seen quite a few available, but wondering if anyone has had any luck with these and if so, which brand/model?

Trying to shoot for better cold weather starting, so picked up some JK Quick Heat glow plugs and looking to either replace or upgrade the starter.

Also, has anyone modified the 82-84 vintage GP controller? I know this is a common mod for the 85's and up electronic controller, but my truck is a cusp, so it has mixed 84-85 parts and unfortunately the old controller. If I can't mod it, i'll probably just upgrade to the newer style and modify that.

Thanks,
Jon

Hi Jon:

I'm using a later model starter in my '83.....I got a rebuilt unit from NAPA truck parts division - I don't rememebr how much it cost, but it was a deal - quite a bit cheaper than the model sold at the auto parts side of the store (plus the counter guy told me it was a better breand of rebuild).....

I tried a couple things (very patient parts guy) but I think we ended up saying it was for a '92 with NA 6.5 and 4 wheel drive in order to end up with the correct starter, although there are other models with the same starter - research this forum to see if you need open nose or closed nose and how many teeth - I've simply forgotten.....other than that, just get the front bracket from the dealer or a salvage yard for a couple bucks and you'll be lovin' it - I was shocked at the difference in starting ease :D

I also upgraded to the later glow controller and have found that quite worthy as well....

Good luck!
