grape there brings up a good question i've had floating around in my head.after i put my banks on my 92 6.5 i had a heck of a time getting my boost up and after sealing the air chamber(which still leaks a little)i can now get over 5lbs and not (wot) but i would like more boost and at lower rpms if possible and grape mentions inlet housing, now mine says a/r.60 what do these mean and could it just be a matter of putting on a different housing to get boost up or more boost?

I have the J engine, 4911 and J intake. I found that the amount of fuel injected, rpms and timing are critical to boost. Installing timing gears, rebuilt pump and 6.5LTD injectors, along with Pete Bierman's suggestions on using the Volvo construction equipment hydraulic pump O ring to seal the intake have all helped.
The stock Bank's required 2500rpm plus to make 12 through 17psi depending on the load and how much lead boot was applied. I was able to get those boost levels with just 60mm3/stroke fuel injected. I'm now using an MHI Bank's turbo from their Ford 7.3L kit with 76mm3/stroke injected. This provides good boost below 2000rpm and really sings above 2100rpm.
I also removed the baffle that sits between the core support and front grill.

hey thanks on the o-ring i remember a post awhile back that said something about a seal but couldn't find it .i can't really get more than 5 to 6 lbs anymore than that and i'm doin 90 mph.i suppose if i was pullin something it would come up more.but when this gets up around 3 1/2 to 4 lbs boy it has power wish i could get the boost up quicker.as i mentioned does anyone know what the numbers mean on the turbo (a/r.60 ) and could it just be an inlet change or are the impellers different?
the a/r of .6 is extremely common for T04b inlet housings. This is the area to radius volume of the scroll. Quick lesson......the bigger that number is, the more air it will move, meaning quicker boost if the intake a/r gets larger and more exhaust flow with more lag time if you make the exhaust a/r bigger. Then you get into trim styles which are usually in letter form..like p trim, q trim etc. I don't know the details other than this refers to the pitch and number of blades on both the inlet and turbine wheel. That's why I'm looking for the a/r of the gm series t3 internally wastegated exhaust housings, and nobody has told me yet.

The December 2003 issue of "Hot Rod" magazine, on page 22, has an article about "Turbos! Part 1: Science & Selection" that is an excellent reference for anyone who wants something other than what GM or Banks supplies as standard. It has an excellent description of A/R ratio, and its effects.
You can also vote for Miss Hot Rod 2004, but that is superfluous to our purposes here. ;)

bought that hot rod today and it is pretty in depth but i would like to see one exclusivly on diesels as gas is well gas!diesel rules
What do you have for an exhaust system? My 93 could easily get 10-1/2 Lbs of boost (pump turned up a big 1/4 turn) with the 6.2 and would just put out a small black puff when floored then clear up. It has a straight 3" exhaust pipe with no muffler.
I haven't had any time yet to get it working properly with the 6.5NA (with banks kit) engine it has now.
A larger exhaust system should give you quicker spool-up too.

thats exactly what i got 3 inch and no muffler i even wrapped the crossover pipe with thermotec.when i'm in 3rd from say 35 mph to 55 this thing will hit 5 1/2 lbs in a hurry and then it kinda levels off.whats the a/r on yours maybe these old banks were a little low as my 82 3/4ton sub has a real hard time getting up over 6 lbs you gotta be pulling pretty hard to get that.
I don't know what the a/r is. Where do you look to find it?
I was driving the 93 today and the boost seems to stay at about 8 or 9 psi under load. It doesn't smoke at all though so I can probably turn up the pump to get a little more out of it.
I don't have anything on it insulated.

the a/r should be cast right into the side of the housing actually it will be raised letters.mine says a/r.60

catmandoo and whatnot,
how loud is your 6.2 turbo? I have a turbo I want to put on my 6.2, but I really would like to leave the muffler off if I could. Is it really loud? or more of a mellow sound? what happens under wot?
thanks for all your help in advance,
Don Cannon

I left my muffler off and it sounds like a semi with the jake brake engaged down a steep grade, only louder with more bass :D !! I decided to put my muffler back on, so as to prevent a war with my neighbors... :D
I say try it and see, it's quite easy to fit a straight pipe in place of the muffler for testing. YMMV, but I didn't notice any seat of the pants power improvements though.
It is fairly loud but not that bad with the windows up.
I think a wastegated turbo would be a lot louder.
If I remember, I will try finding the AR number on my banks turbo tommorow.
catmandoo, do you have a good aircleaner setup? If it is restrictive, it would cut the boost down.
Is it possible that the C intake manifold could be causing to low boost? I put a J on mine when I got the turbo system.
Does anyone have an extra volvo O-ring they could sell me? I don't feel like trying to find a place locally just to get an o-ring. (I am just using an aircleaner gasket right now)

my air cleaner right now consists of 2 mandrel bent 90 degree elbows welded together and a cone shaped k&n air filter on the end of it ,for the winter i took off my ram-air hood and good thing cuz 2 days later i hit 2 pheasants and i don't want to replace it cuz of some stupid deer.i swear somedays there are more deer here in iowa than people.anyway my filter sets pretty much right next to the turbo come summer and i get the hood back on i'm gonna fab up an air box to just suck air from the hood.and the intake is a good question as it is the original with the egr that i would like to get rid of .kinda weird thing today i noticed running down the road at 65 that my boost was up to say 3 to 3 1/2 lbs and the egt was down to about 325 i'll usually run 1 to 1 1/2 lbs and egt of 400 to 425 and it was somewhat warmer today than most lately!
I couldn't find the number on mine but I didn't feel like taking any hoses off to see it better.
If you think that the intake might be causing it, you can try my extra one and buy it if it helps or send it back if it is no better. It is a wide open one with nothing inside. (no egr or dual plane stuff)

send me an email what ya want for it ;kjmoore66@hotmail.com thanks, little less restriction couldn't hurt
wish i was smart enough to post pics....but my new ford powerstroke intercooler is now tucked safely away in front of a 5.5" thick C&R superspeedway radiator. Damn that takes a lot of cutting, but the radiator is still in the stock location. All this good stuff along the the 60-1 inlet on my own turbo, this should absolutely demolish the banks set up i have on there now.
