I just recieved a Banks 3in. Y pipe I ordered, the one that comes in the Stinger system($600,no way!) to build my own free flow exhast. The problem is it dosen't seem to fit up perfectly. A little wide. And the round maniflold gaskets are to big for my manifolds. I checked the ticket, part # on the ticket and the y pipe. My engine is out of a 1 ton school bus (J series)and I thought maybe it had different exhsaust manifolds than a 92 6.2L that came in a GMC/Chevy truck which I ordered it for. I just want to make sure its not my ignorance why it wont work before I call Banks Power. Thanks for your time in advance.
After spending $1600 on a complete turbo kit.....the only part of the exhaust that did fit was the down pipe. Had to put the truck together without using the banks muffler. When I expressed my displeasure on this forum, I was more or less put down for not knowing how to put a turbo kit on correctly. For all of you that feel this way check out the march 97 issue of Mustang High Performance Magazine and see if the mustang I built with a turbo changes your opinion. Bottom line, I wasn't happy and who dares say anything negative about mr. perfect banks. To top it off I am just thrilled to have a whopping 5 pounds of boost. Banks Power.....what a joke.

Grape,
Only 5 psi of boost! Is this @ WOT? I see up to 9 or 10 at wot on my 88 burb. Did you try tweaking it.
We had some problems getting the exhaust to fit nicely as well. we needed the downpipe "modification"...A few good, strategically placed blows of a hammer. So it would clear the shock mount.
Don't get discouraged, Once you get it working right, it Rocks!
I'm not wasting any more time or money the banks kit. I thought about changing inlet side of the compressor to a 60-1 or 62-1, except the exhaust side is waaaaaay to big to get any boost in a timely manner. When the engine that's on my engine stand right now is completed it will have my own turbo and external wastegate system on it. Then the banks set up with 20K miles goes on ebay. I have a light duty truck and pump with egr crap removed, can't turn the pump up more than stock without what I consider excessive smoke...ie....it looks like a junker going down the road puffing black smoke.

Grape, you're not the only one with a Banks problem. I have a good friend who is an aircraft mechanic and knows diesels as well. He ordered a Banks Sidewinder for his 89 Suburban and the crossover pipe wouldn't fit. His air intake had to be modified by him because Banks had never addressed the problem of having the air intake being blocked by the headlight on his model truck. Banks couldn't resolve his problems so he had to make things fit. He was not happy. Personally I have a Banks Sidewinder on my 86 Suburban 6.2. I currently get around 9 lbs of boost pulling a boat on a long hill at wot, with egt's around 900-950. Around town I get boosts around 5-6 lbs on level ground and egts. running around 450 or so. I'm pleased with the performance I get, it's a big improvement over the NA version I started with.

I had an identical problem with peak boost at around 5 psi on my banks. I had even turned the pump up to the point that it wasn't giving me any additional power but more smoke. Recently, I come across a 4911 pump rebuilt and installed it. Now my peak boost exceeds 12 psi on hard accelerations. What a difference! The exhaust system fit really well on my sub, but it took all day to figure out how the jigsaw went together. The docs were non-existent.
As for the banks, I don't care too much for the initial lag that a waste gate would eliminate... what is the feasibility of waste-gating the banks?

Check the pictures out in the link below, for swapping in an MHI TE06H wastegated turbo for the Banks Garrett T04B. The MHI is the Banks turbo they use on their 6.9/7.3L Ford Powerstroke kits.
external wastegate on the crossover pipe is an easy install and flows waaaayyy more air than the internal wastegated T3 series housings such as the GM-4 thru 8 series. External gates with diameters of 40mm can be had for less than 300 bucks.

Externally vented exhaust may not be legal (noise and emmissions etc.), so extra pipework may be needed to send the vented exhaust back into the exhaust system after the turbo.
of course it has to go back to the downpipe or it becomes open exhaust.
