View Full Version : Compression test - can it be done with cold engine?

There is a -89 van engine that I am planning to buy;

It's from a wrecked vehicle so I can't run it to normal operating temperature.

So what is the best way to check for the cylinder compression? Also, is there a way to test the cooling system for leakage without heating the engine up?

thanks, smile.gif

I called the seller he told he can arrange a test stand. So the cylinder compression test will be a routine task.

But how's the cooling system compression tested?

I recall Avant used engines are done this but I am not aware of the details..

Hi Artto,
I use a "cooling system pressure test kit".
It is a pressure pump, like the kinda thing you would blow up a bicycle tyre with. this has a tube which will attach onto an adapter which fits onto the radiater at the cap.
The pump usually has a pressure gauge.

Pump the pressure up to no more than 15psi.
If the pressurre showing on the gauge drops it usually means there is a system leak somewhere.

If you want to check for a head gasket failure, the easiest way is to put a tube onto the overflow pipe at the radiater cap. fill a bucket of water and put the tube into water. Get the engine warmed up to operating temp. If a head gasket is blowing you will get a constant flow of bubbles into the water.

What happened to the suburban you had?
