View Full Version : red engines
When did the red colored engines quit being used? I'm looking at a 83 van that has the 6.2 in it for parts. The van has 11-83 in the door jamb. We scraped around on the block but could not find any red color.

The above posters are correct, only the 1982 model year trucks received red engines.
That is one reason I had my new SAA engine painted red - to honor the origins of the 6.2L -6.5LTD family of engines. Another reason is that it matches the exterior paint on my truck !!

The Donor 83 Blazer that I used for my diesel conversion had a black painted engine that was peeling revealing red paint underneath so the red engines snuck into a few 83's......Merle

To thoes who know:
Arn't the '82 red blocks better in some way also? Higher nickle content maybe? I ask because I have the chance to buy a compleat '82 6.2L motor. It hasn't ran in a few years, but the guy wants $100 for it, and misc diesel parts, hydroboost, etc. Seems way worth it to me, just for the parts. Haven't seen it yet, but he said it was a red one.

Buy it before the seller hears about www.TheDieselPage.com. (http://www.TheDieselPage.com.) The general belief is that the '82 red blocks are higher nickel content. If the block turns out to be badly cracked, send me a piece of it and I will analyze it for nickel.

Diesel crawler where in WV are you? I work with the red engine I picked up over the weekend took the pan off to find no sign of cracking in the mains, it had had the heads off for some reason. So I sprayed it down with a pentrating lube and some oil, atf, kero mix and let it set for awhile before I pecked around on the crank with a block of wood and small hammer. Got it to turn a whole turn so I will start taking the rods and pistons out to check the cylinder walls. This guy has another 6.2 in a 83 model van that supposed to run but has no flywheel or flexplate he wants to sell but the price is kinda high not being able to here it run.

Odee, I'm in the northern part of the state, along the Ohio River. Small town known as New Martinsville, just south of the Mason-Dixon line.
I'll have to go look at the '82 motor that guy was talking about, make sure it is what he said it is.
