i am in the process of getting things together to build a 300 horse 6.5. i know of 2 manufacturers of the 18-1 6.5 piston, Peninsular and Mahler. However, i cant find a good place to buy the Mahler pistons, or even find out how much they are going to cost me. i know the Peninsular ones are a hair over $100 a piece.

Also, any one heard of boring a 6.2 out to the 18-1 piston size and slipping them in? i read a report before i deployed on a few folks doing this, but cant seem to find that either.

thanks guys, noel

Yes,the 6.2 block can be bored for 6.5 pistons.Buy the pistons 1st,ofcourse.What brand are Kennedy Diesel selling? They are full height/dished,that`s what you should be looking for.

Also another important note, not ALL 6.2's can be bored to the size you're talking about. Only the late model 6.2's with a block cast number ending in "599" can be bored out to the dimensions of a 6.5. The early blocks don't have that much meat.

Check out the Diesel Depot, I helped a friend rebuild a 6.5 last year, and the pistons that DD carried then were the same pistons as Peninsular has....IIRC they were $985.00 including rings, and ceramic coated tops.

what year did they switch over to the 599 block? I'm going after another core engine today an it is a black colored block with the 660 casting number that supposidly came out of a P-30 van. Are just the 599 block capable of taking the large overbore? What about the early red engines just better metal content in those block or thicker also?

Whenever possible, stick to +.020" to retain maximum cylinder wall thickness.

The red blocks(what#s are they)are hi-nickle,then to say them $ and cost us $$$$$,they lowered nickle content.Bad move. They didn`t want to risk their fruitful contract w/DOD,so they gave them the nickle(US govt:tough customer/willing to pay...with our money). No,only the 599s are borable. You can get 19:1 marine pistons for 6.2.
