Glow plug light

Just before my clutch went south, I was noticing that the glow plug light would not come on when I was trying to start the cold engine. Before, when the light was coming on, the engine started right up. When the light wasn't coming on, it had to grind a bit before starting on an 80 degree day. The odd thing was, that once it started and warmed a bit, I turned the engine off and then turned the key on and the glow plug light came on as normal - but when it got cold again, the light wouldn't come on. I did this a couple of times, so I am guessing that the bulb is OK and the hard starting indicates that the glow plug circuit isn't being activiated when cold.

Do these symptoms give anyone a clue as to the problem? Any wild guesses are appreciated.
