Does anyone know the difference between 96 and 97-99 4L80E trans. What about earlier years and the 97-99 4l80E trans?

What do you want to know?
There are changes made through the years from the connector style in 93 and up to the one way clutches in 99.
If you want to know them all, get a ATSG manual and you know all about it.

Will a 99 4l80e work acceptably in a 96 4l80e application? I have been told the difference is the location of the oil lines.
I would expect oil lines would be quite simple to re-route. I would be more concerned about the electronic signals and electronic interface connections.

A local transmission rebuilder said the electrical inputs were the same. I would like to have someone else confirm this though.

All input and output signals are the same for basic transmission control, external sensors might be different.( speedsensor, neutral switch)
Differances are internal and minor.( shaft lenght and clutches)
