hello,
is it possible to obtain more than 300hp with a 6.5 td, i read about duramax with 400hp,500hp and some over the 550hp, can we do something really powerful with the 6.5td.

Peninsular diesel make a 400hp version of the 6.5. I just installed their 300hp model. The 400hp version is aimed at the race/show market. Not sure of the reliability and whether the 6.5 crank and bottom end can handle much more hp than that.

I could push more than 300hp if I had an intercooler and could find more fuel. I'm limited by what the DS-4 pump can deliver. My truck doesn't smoke much at all, which makes me think there is a lot more power waiting to be unleashed.

Jake, did you but the 300hp Penn. drop in? How long have you had it and how do you like the performance?

I have had mine for about 4 months and am very happy with it. It is right for what I use my truck for. I have the 18:1, but without the Pennisular IP or Turbo. I used the stock IP because it was recently rebuilt.

I think that 300+ is easier said than done. A stock Dmax LB7 is rated at 300 engine HP. We see 240-250 RWHP from a Dmax-Allison combo. If one were to compare the mass of an Allison, I'd have to figure the Allison would "consume" more power than a 4L80E.

RJ had/has a pretty potent setup and we had him in the 220's with a stock-ish turbo. I think with the proper turbo, it may be doable. I did not get to dyno my 96 with a load before it was sold. With the Peninsular turbo it pulled fairly decent in the mid range, but in general it was a bit flat. With the stock turbo it was strong on the bottom, but died very quickly as the power and RPM came up. I honestly don't think it would have topped 300 engine HP in either config.

The turbo was, in fact, bone stock when we dynoed. I didn't put the Schwitzer on until the Pull-Off.

If.. and it's a sizeable if, you could get a Pen engine tuned just right using their 300 hp rated marine fuel injection system, and if you used their hi-flow turbocharger, and if you used their marine watercooled intercooler, it would come awfully close to their claims.

Fact is, we've towed side by side, using the PP 6.5TD (without the best intercooler or turbo) and a stock 2001 Duramax, while towing very comparable travel trailers. The hill pulling performance was oh so close.
