Has any one tried installing thicker head gaskets to achive 18:1? why wouldnt this work , get some copper gaskets made to the right thickness and wouldnt be any different than making the pistons shorter. I believe you remove .060 off the pistons to achive 18:1 why not make gaskets .060 thicker?

Sounds like a good idea but would it create a problem with the intake manifold?
Something to think about!

.060 is not much but if it posed a problem with the intake you could always double the intake gaskets.
They heads angle away from each other. By moving them up you are moving them farther apart. It probably wouldn't be enough to cause a problem but if it did then the bolt holes not line up.

Whatnot got it! I used thicker gaskets on my GTO to lower the compression so I could run pump gas.
I don't remember what thicknes they were, but it did not work because all my intake holes were off. I could have rebored the holes and then rematched my intake :D  Not really worth it! I just buy gas at the Airport :D !!!

Just for curiosity sake what is the compressed gasket thickness of a stock 6.5 head gasket.
Is the aftermarket fel pro thicker than a stock GM?
On the gassers it was common to loose compression when replacing the steel shim GM gasket with a fel pro.

A another problem with thicker head gaskets is the pushrods for the valves will be shorter.
There is no provision to adjust the rocker arms.
"Squashed" thickness as .039" Later gaskets (GM are FelPro) are .049"
Sinking a piston below deck is NOT a practice that is widely accepted in gasoline engines, and IMHO, not the best plan for diesel either...
Don't forget that a thicker gasket will also increase the surface area pushing outward. Could increase the chance of head gasket failure.

No cheap way out when it comes to changing major characteristic of engine`s dynamic.Sorry.The thicker Fel-Pro gaskets are meant to compensate for material lost from resurfacing.Dished-top pistons is the way to go.
