View Full Version : how long should the I Pump last
I just replaced the FSD in my 1994 TD and put it in the cool.Any one out there know how long the pump should last.I have about 100000KM on mine.

On the pump I Have 160,000 miles (258K KM's) I'm on the second replacement FSD, The Pump mounted driver died after about 100K miles the FSD on the intake died after 30,000 and the Heath is still going strong.
16gaSxS Is that the first pump on your rig.

The pumps should last 100K Miles, or maybe double that. Bad fuel limits. Earlier pumps were worse.

My truck has the mechanical pump (no FSD) but I have 163,000+ miles and still going strong, easy hot and cold starts, injectors have the same miles too. I feel that using a good fuel additive and regular filter changes makes a big difference with these 6.2L and 6.5L trucks...my 7.3L Power Stroke seems less affected by additives. I use a double dose of Power Service every fill-up.

I religiously used Stanadyne Performance formula in the suggested amount for the first 60,000 miles on my first pump before it failed.
I didn't use any snake oil on my replacement pump from 60,000 to my current 145,000 miles and it hasn't failed yet.
Should I conclude that SPF caused my first failure? OR should I conclude that snake oils make no difference?
Except for Non-winterized fuels needing an anti-gel additive, I tend to lean towards the latter.
Regards,
Rick
I think it must be really hard to tell how long the pumps last .Because when the FSD go,s GM replaces the whole pump.I guess the older non electrical pumps would be a good indicator.

Still on factory IP with 173,000 miles, actually just replaced the stock PMD with the FSD Cooler (remote mount) yesterday. Stalling problem seems to be solved.

At the dealership I frequent, they say typically about 300K (km) for the pumps they replace as worn out.
My IP gave up the ghost with 70K first one was replaced (previous owner) @ 69K.

My 94 DS4 failed at 60,000 as I said in an earlier post. The PMD on my current pump failed at about 135,000(total) miles. Both PMD's were bolted to the pump.( The PMD I'm using now is the one I bought for the old pump when I thought it had failed)
It's difficult to determine why these pumps fail(mechanically)....I'll bet the rebilders can tell you exactly why they do fail.
The PMD is simply a poorly designed electronic device. (It's just a simple solid state relay driver with a passive, resistive timing circuit) The early ones were particularly bad. It's possible that the later ones are better. Looking at the posts from people who have had them fail, It appears that a lot of them fail mounted to external heat sinks.
Does this indicate that heat might not always be the culprit or is it possible it's just about as hot with a heatsink behind the radiator getting hot airflow from the fan, as bolted to the pump?

Hey, Todd. My wife's sister lives in LaPine! Actually, it's Clint and Rachel Kelley. My wife and I have spent a month there in each of the last 3 years. Small world. If you want to talk some more, we can move to the Forum.
My second electronic pump is still good, sitting in a box, after about 60,000 miles, FWIW. I think I may have replaced an FSD that didn't need it, just trying to chase down a skipping problem. Anyhow, those days are over. With the mechanical pump, I can worry about other things. If I don't worry, who will?
Eighteen grand, and counting, without a skip! Never had that happen in the previous 95 thousand.
Are you still having frost every morning?

Good Day!
?? ??? ?? ~ ???K miles Green tag pump installed on 95 pickup
2 Jan 00 ~ 80K miles Purchased 95 pickup
?? ??? ?? ~ ???K miles Moved FSD to home-made cooler on IM
11 Oct 02 ~ 162K miles FSD failed - replaced
28 May 04 ~ 200K miles FSD failed - replaced & mounted behind driver side headlight
As above, pump was replaced at least once B4 I bought this truck, with a green tag pump; this pump has >= 140K miles that I'm certain of.
"The PMD is simply a poorly designed electronic device. (It's just a simple solid state relay driver with a passive, resistive timing circuit)" Do you have schematics? How did you come on this information?
Blessings!
