Ok I've had my `96 truck for 3yrs now the only thing
I have replaced on the engine is the glow plug
relay and alternator.
I have no idea what has been replaced prior to me purchasing the truck.
Should I be worried about the PMD failing?
What other problems are the 6.5's prone to?
I am new to the diesel engine and all that relates.
What mods should I look into first?
I pull a 20' trailer with a `69 bird on it,
I also just want more power and reliability.

Thanks,
Greg

Unfortunately, I think the FSD/PMD's life is influenced highly by the luck of the draw. Remote mounting does increase the odds, and in most cases extends the life greatly.

Welcome to THE PAGE GotDiesel!!!

You can just go along like you have and wait till or if you have a problem. Other folks have put a replacement FSD on remote mount and use the Pump Mounted Driver as a back up if they should have problem. A built in spare so to speak. If your past the 120,000 mile mark were GM will replace it if you have problem then it's on your dime. If you do have problems and you have to fix it just be aware that you may not have to replace the whole pump like many place want you to do right off the bat.

I've 177k+ miles. It had 106,000 when I got it.

Which performance modifications would be the best to start with? Gauges? exhaust? cooling system?

Check your t-stat housing -

if it has one hump, you need the cooling upgrades

if it has two humps, check the waterpump for the letters HD cast into the housing, indicating you have most of the cooling upgrades factory installed.

RJ;

Gauges can wait if you JUST do the exhaust and intake clean up, but I agree Gauges before, boost and chip or reflash Ect.
