I came across a 1984 brochure for the 8.2It looks very similar to the design of the 6.5 The most interesting part was the dyno sheets. It shows how far Diesel Tech. has come. Base engine non turbo 2 models 145 hp 2800 rpm 330 ft tq at 1200 rpm, and 165 hp at 2800 rpm 345 ft tq 1200rpm.
Turbo 3 models
165hp at 2600 rpm 418 ft tq 1400 rpm
205hp at 2800 rpm 442 ft tq 1700 rpm
230hp at 2800 rpm 510 ft tq 1700 rpm

I have driven a few 8.2's in some GMC's mostly tank trucks. It did not compare to the small Cat engines. Ran very well empty, but loaded they were kind of sluggish. It was a short lived engine.
Roadway Express had some in their C-8000 Ford city tractors, as I think Cat went on a strike back then and Ford needed engines for the C-8000 cab over trucks.
I don't remember what issues they had, but they had problems, then it was dropped. I always thought it would have been a good swap into a pickup, but the turbo was on the rear center of the engine with a 3"/4" downpipe which would have been a problem at the firewall.
Thats all I remember as that was in the mid to late 80's . smile.gif

A local school transportation company had over 200 buses with them in the 80-90s, and they raved about their reliabilty. Of course, loaded they probably didn't equal the tare weight of a city trailer rig.

From what I've heard about the 8.2 is that it was hard on head gaskets much like the '82 6.2's were. I don't know if this continued to be an issue throughout production though.

I have never driven one. But from the specs don't you think they were a little under powered? Looks like our 6.5s are moderate contenders.
