I searched the archives, but couldn't find an answer to this. So, to those that have changed their oil cooler lines, do you have to change the oil when changing the lines? I ordered a set from Greg at lubespecialists, and I'm not sure if I will get them in time for changing them this weekend. I need to change the oil this weekend (close to 6000 miles on this oil), so I don't want to wait another weekend. Or should I just hold off until I get the new lines?

Thanks,
Bill

6k miles on an oil change? You're crazy!

Anyways, I installed the lines your talking about doing on my 95 sub. I waited till I needed an oil change to do it. I ended up taking everything apart (replacing the lines) and leaving the oil in the engine till after I was done. After I got the lines replaced and everything put back together, I made sure I had a little extra oil in the engine. I then fired it up, watched the oil pressure till it came up, let it run for another 30 seconds, then shut it down, and checked the oil. I added some to get it in the safe zone, then started it again to let the engine warm up, then changed the oil. Its quite a job, just takes some time to get the lines in and out, if yours is a 4x4, there is some extra work in taking off the oil filter 90 degree adaptor assembly. If you haven't changed the seals on the oil filter adaptor in awhile, you might as well get those from the dealer prior to the job, so you'll have everything.

If you have to wait for the lines go ahead and change the oil now! Then when the lines come in, you can make the call to change the oil or not when you change the lines. My call, I would change it again, that way you can get rid of some of the trash you're ultimatly going to get into the system while changing the lines

John8662,

Thanks for the reply. I wasn't sure how much oil drains out when changing the lines. I will make a point to get the seals for the oil filter adaptor, it appears to leak a bit also (just might be the lines).

As to oil change interval. I run Rotella T synth, and usually change between 4K and 5K, but I don't ever get to drive this Suburban much. The wife has taken control of this vehicle, and doesn't tell me the mileage. So the rare occurrance that I get to drive it, I check to see when it should be changed. And it is overdue.

Thanks again,
Bill

Bill, if you want longer drain intervals, you might consider a Dual Bypass oil filter. Talk to Greg; he can fix you up.
