Enough time has passed where you have probably made your new engine choice. Please advise!

I've given up on acquiring a new GEP block...

Moving ahead with a block with date code A100 that Kennedy had on hand. It is at the machinist to get splayed mains and blueprinting done.

My crank is at another shop being indexed and blueprinted for stroke.

The Kennedy 18:1 pistons are nearing completion.

More as it is available...

Is Steve Schmidt doing any of the machine work?

He knows a thing or two about Engine Machining...

What were the problems associated with the GEP block?

Billman,

In fact, Roger at Schmidt Automotive is grinding my crank shaft. I had wanted to get this into their race shop, but they said it would be fine at the Automotive branch.

The GEP blocks simply are not available without buying a short or long block.

How much did you save going the route your going as compared to buying a GEP long block and having the 18/1 pistons installed with the splayed mains? Or is the route your going a better solution to the new block?

Long blocks from GEP are around $4,000 to $6,000. I do the builds myself. At the time I made my decision, I thought I had a useable set of heads from my blown engine. Turns out I don't. All that is reuseable from my engine are the rods and crank.

I got a good deal on the block I'm getting, so I will still probably come out ahead.

ronniejoe, I take it from your decision that you don't feel that the enhanced block alone is sufficient for heavy duty towing?

If I could have acquired a GEP block, I would have. It would have received splayed mains, though, anyway. At this point, I don't think there is enough data to say for sure that the new blocks will eliminate all of the problems. My block had many of the enhancements in it. It had the redesigned main caps, the redesigned oil jets, smaller outer main bolts, etc. It didn't have the improved alloy, though.

I'm quite sure the new blocks are much better. I would not have trusted it for the power levels that I want to run at, though.

What rings are you using?

Total seal gapless.

RJ - are you re-using the original crank? Rods?

The original crank is being indexed right now. The rods will be used as long as they check out and can be length matched properly.

Is anything going for a cryo soak?

Block machining is holding me up at the moment. Will address that issue next week.
