I am buying a 99 1500 suburban with the 6.5 td tomorrow. I am very new to the 6.5 platform and diesels in general, are there any common issues with this motor to watch for? Furthermore, are there any upgrades I can make to resolve these issues?
Thanks

Hello and welcome
You need to spend some time reading on here
All the weak points are addressed in various posts, and solutions.
When i got my first 6.2/6.5 i had no light diesel experiance
I have had 6.2/6.5's for the last 20 years because of the information on this site
I have rebuilt both engines, and brought a 99 Sub back from the grave
I would jump in the 99 and drive it anywhere.
PMD is the first thing to address, it needs to be on a cooler mounted away from the engine
So do some reading, add more info to your thread about the Sub and there will be lots of help if you ask for it

Thank you! PMD was already relocated by previous owner, I will take your advice and read up on other posts.

Watch your oil lines.
Clean between the rads as stuff builds up between them.
Look at upgrading your fuel filter

The 1999 1500 series diesel Suburbans came with 8-lug wheels and a somewhat higher GVW than the Suburbans in the earlier 1990s. This gave them bigger brakes and higher towing capacities - among other advantages. And, the late 1990s Subs were as refined as they got. They are special, sought after and valuable - if in good shape...
Welcome to the board. The knowledge base here at TDP for the 6.5L Turbo Diesel is unbeatable. Plus, what's publicly known about this engine likely originated right here.
