1996 turbo diesel wont start!!

Hello. I bought a 1996 6.5 turbo diesel yesterday. Had 149,000 miles. So truck has been sitting for awhile but fired up right away when i showed up to look at it. Ran great but it had a massive exhaust leak on driver side cross over pipe and had no power, truck would hardly move. So i had a buddy tow strap me home i had the truck running the whole time so i would have lights and brakes... as of today i replaced the cross over pipe and went to start and it ran for 3 sec than died.. it tries to start but wont go... what the heck!!! Just ran an hour ago.. cranks over great as i have a battery charger on it.. any ideas im new to the diesel world. Thanks guys

Fyi i took air cleaner off and of course massive mouse nest. But it ran after i took that off but before i did the cross over pipe.. is the cat clogged?? Or exhaust for that being??

Got it running... clogged cat. Cut it off starts and runs great.

A clogged Cat/soot trap will make them run terrible.....

Hope the new to you truck is a good one....
