I was cutting down I-95 doing 70 mph when I noticed a white HUMMER closing in fast. As it past me doing about 85 mph I could hear the engine going flat out. Turned out to be a Border Patrol HUMMER. I drove HUMMERs (6.5 not 6.2) in the military and I know it could not go that fast. Any thoughts on what modifications were made to it?

I would imagine there is some kind of governer on millitary units that was removed or disabled on the Border Patrol unit. Either that, or it was born a civilian hummer. (the forestry and parks services has a few civvie hummers that I know of)

The first generation hummer's had a 3 speed auto while the second generation (A2's) have the 4L80E four speed which does alow for a much higher top speed.

We had the Hummer II's that had the 6.5 and doing 65 mph going downhill was feat in itself. But a governor would explain that restriction. Just thought a Border Patrol Hummer going that fast was something you just don't see too often.

There were hummer's that had the 6.5 and the turbo 400 transmission, and if you had one at 65 mph you were doing good! I use to think they would come apart at 55 mph, with the engine noise and unbalanced 37 inch tires  .........what a ride!

The border patrol Humvees are actually brand new 2002/2003 civilian Hummers, and are equipped with the 6.5 TD now called the "6500 Optimizer" by AM General. It has the same 195/430 rating that the 6.5 TD did prior to AMG buying the engine plant from GM. These border patrol units also have the 4L80E and a 4.91 (1.92 geared hub x 2.73 diff) ratio with 37 inch tires. They should be capable OF 85-90, but if sustained, it will overheat the transfer case and scorch the fluid.
