New member,,, thanks. Looking for a Diesel Suburban that has minimal electronic controls. I want it to be EMP proof. (I'm not one of those,,,, yet) Found a nice 84 with 80k miles California original now in Florida. Does an 84 6.2 have any electronic controls??? Controler for the glow plugs???? Is there an ECM,,,, thanks

All 6.2L diesels (any year) are mechanically controlled with no ECM. The 6.2L engine only requires one 12V wire to keep the fuel solenoid open. The glow plug controller can easily be modified to be manually controlled by a rocker switch, if need be.
The later model (1989 and newer, I think) 6.2L diesels may have electronically-controlled automatic transmissions (4L60E or 4L80E), but they will have a stand alone TCM (transmission control module). These can also be replaced with mechanical controls where you shift the transmission manually, if needed.
There were no diesel Suburbans from 1992-1993 when the body style first changed to the GMT400. In 1994, the electronically-controlled 6.5L diesel was used, and you'll want to avoid those for your purposes, unless you swap-in a mechanical injection pump and manual transmission, but that is not all that fun to do.
Yes, the dash pads, and most other parts, are the same for the Suburbans and trucks of the same body style. The 'square body' trucks were built from 1973 - 1988, and the Blazers/Jimmys/Suburbans were built 1973 - 1991.

The 1984+ 6.2L diesel powered 1500 series trucks/Suburbans originally sold in California (i.e. Dr. Lee's) did have an ECM - it controlled/monitored the emissions system. But, as arveetek mentioned, all 6.2L diesels were mechanically injected.

Nope, for a couple reasons. They had no need to control a transmission function (TCC for the 700R4), and no EGR. There was just nothing to monitor/control. There are exceptions for some model years, depending on the GVWR. Some 2500's with a GVWR of 7200# were ECM'd. None of the 8600#+ were. This continued through the GMT 400 models (in regards to emission systems, but they had ECM/PCM for Diesel fuel injection and auto tranny control). GMT 800's (2001+) had only "HD" Diesel engine applications, so it was all the same after that.
"ECM" is really an acronym for two different systems. Early, it was the Emission Control Module, and later was/is the Engine control Module. The electric/electronic carburetors and early (gasser) fuel injection, before OBD, was in between the two.
