ATS Turbocharger System for the 6.2L Diesel

I was going through our archive recently, and ran across this photo that I took during our 2000 TDP Rendezvous. This is an ATS Turbocharger system installed on a 6.2L diesel. I don't remember ever seeing another one first-hand - they are rare, but were offered as a commercial turbo kit for the 1980s 6.2L diesel. Thought you might like to see one too. Jim

I Happen to have one of these...
It was the first bit of turbo stuff i scrounged up when i entered into the 6.2 diesel world.
I traded a late 80's Citation for a 6.2 that was changed out of a suburban.It came with an ATS kit,but the turbo wasn't usable.The wheels on the turbo were chewed up from stuff going through it.
After reading on this site i decided to go with the banks setup.I figured i would use it someday on a project where i wasn't trying to get a bunch of power.

Jim, that was on my 87 Suburban, when my youngest son and I attended the 2000 Rendezvous. Good times. I just got rid of the Suburban last year. I still have the engine and turbo, and will probably put it on my 87 GMC pickup. I also have another ATS turbo setup that my son may use. He has a Military Blazer!

Thanks for filling in the blanks Terry. I think one of the attractions for the ATS was that the owner could retain the OE air cleaner assembly and CDR plumbing.

Just bought an '87 Suburban Diesel. I've had a ton of square bodies and diesels, but never a diesel square body. Is this ATS setup worthwhile? How difficult is it to install?

A true answer would be hard to give...


It is old technology.



What a owner wants out of their truck would be in the mix also.



If you want a turbo just have a turbo then yes is a good answer.


If you plan to tow much at all well maybe it's not so much..



Parts are no longer produced but the turbo could be rebuilt if needed by most turbo shops.

It won’t see any duty for towing as I have a Duramax for that. However, I would like to have some more power.

Back in the day the 4x4 magazines did numerous write up's on the various kits for the 6.2

The power levels were actually slightly better than the GM factory stuff offered in 1992-->

I owned a 1991 Burb with a Banks kit and it was a sweet heart

Power levels on these are never going to be anything close to to a DMAX, but are very nice compared to the stock N/A engine.

I would love to scare up another 91 Burb with a turbo
