Original Fuel Pickup sock for our 6.5s No Longer Available

From all of the comments here and on other Diesel sites, I'm concerned that one of these is a necessity.
I looked all over the web, Rock Auto, AutoZone, JEGs, etc. (JEGs sold me one, then had to tell me a week later that they were NLA) I then did just plain old Google searches. Found dozens of places that listed them, but when queried, all came back with the same answer.... No Longer Available.
$20 seemed to be the original price when they were available.
I found one place on Amazon that had one, pd $37.70 for it. It has been shipped. Now that it has been shipped, that supplier shows "Not Available" for this part, so I must have purchased the last one. We sill see in a few days if I really get the real thing.

There are a lot of items for our trucks that are no longer available, and the aftermarket has not picked up the slack.

I tried using an aftermarket fuel pickup sending unit once, and ended up having a ton of issues getting fuel to flow. Apparently the sock kept collapsing down when trying to suck fuel out of the tank. I cleaned up the original sock off my old sending unit and reinstalled it. Been fine since, and that was a few years ago.

I ordered one from Rockauto a few months ago, part #TS1020.

The application guide shows it for chevys from 1988-2000 as well.

The only one that was listed on eBay yesterday was going for $59. Now after you said something, today's search has revealed a few more $19 to $50.
Patience would have got me there.....
Since Rock Auto & Jegs let me down, I figured I'd better take what I could get fast before they were all gone...
I was also considering going Casey's route also if I couldn't connect with the a new one.

I just bought one at LMC Truck right before last Christmas. I bought a sending unit and wasn't sure if it (the sending unit) had the correct sock, so I bought a separate sock also. Invoice shows $34.95. As it turned out, the sending unit had the correct sock. And it's a good thing, because it looked like the sock was pressed on and couldn't be replaced. I'm keeping it JIC esp if it is now discontinued. I went back to LMC and searched the part# and the search came back 0 hits. I'm wondering if the TS1020 is a replacement. TS1020 is showing up all over the place as the correct sock for my '92 MFI.

Just ordered a AC Delco TS1020 through Auto Zone today, around $25 I think.

Will report back with results on it being the correct one.

I don't know if the diesel sock is different from the gas version. I do know that a sock helps to prevent water from migrating into the fuel pickup tube.

If a particular sock was too hard to get, I'd be inclined to experiment with another part that is available... Like a sock for a newer Duramax powered truck or.... Jim

Generally they're pretty good about showing things as in stock, back ordered, or out of stock. I didn't actually order one, but maybe worth a try for someone who needs one?

Well, darn it! Rock Auto showed no options for the "Fuel Pump Strainer" when I needed it. I see it is available now. At that time, I went to other outlets as I stated and other places like Autozone & Jegs showed in stock, so I ordered from each of those two places. Both came back days later and said, sorry, discontinued, here is your money back. I found one on Amazon for stupid money and bought it. BTW, other auto part outlets showed it at discontinued.
Not sure how Rock Auto has them again. Maybe they came across some NOS.
Anyway, I found one and am good to go!...I just paid too much for it!

Unless your sock is shredded there should be no reason to replace just clean it out with maybe some dish soap etc, rinse well, and maybe blow with compressed air. Dry well and reinstall.

I don't know if the diesel sock is different from the gas version.
Everything I've read indicates the gasoline socks are more restrictive, most likely because gasoline is thinner than Diesel especially when cold. To get the proper wicking for gas it would need a tighter construction.

Even the Holley hydramat is not compatible with diesel fuels. Which is too bad since they are offered in so many designs.

But, if your sock is damaged or the sending unit was replaced and now has the wrong sock then you need to do something. Sure you can run without a sock but in my case our driveway is so steep and long you'd risk sucking air long before running out of fuel.

Some are concerned that with higher flow lift pumps that factory strainer is a restriction, maybe, maybe not. Would like to see some vacuum readings from the suction side of a LP with and w/o sock.

Hopefully tomorrow I'll be able to swing by parts store and see if that TS1020 came in and have some pics.

The other year I replaced all my fuel and brake lines - including the in-tank assembly. That looks like the filter sock that was on it, but I guess the specific material would be the key.

That's the same design as my OEM sock. It should have what's basically a suction relief valve in the round end; basically a rubber flap that will open up and let fuel flow into the pickup tube if the strainer should become clogged.

The aftermarket sock I had was just the mesh material that was pinched off on both ends with no round rubber valve.

As Robyn said, as long as the material is suited for diesel fuel, you should be good to go. I don't think the aftermarket material mine was made of liked diesel fuel, and clogged easily.

Amazing isn't it? I couldn't find one on Rock Auto. Did extensive online searches and found multiple sites stating that there were "no longer available", not "out of stock". I even ordered one from Summit Racing who cancelled my order saying they were no longer available. I finally found one at Amazon for an outrageous price and grabbed it. A month later Rock Auto has them again. Now I see others do to....
Hmmm, A smell a conspiracy to part me from more of my hard earned garbanzos.....
Oh well, we're up and running again. Water under the bridge so to speak..
