I have owned this truck for about 3 years. Don't drive it but around town like one or twice a week but ever since I have had it there has been this rattle noise that sounds like a heat shield rattle but after listening using the rubber hose trick it sounds like it's coming from inside the engine itself. I have never had a problem with the truck and the oil pressure is fine. Just seeing if this is a normal harmonic noise or something else.

Record it and post a link, and maybe we can help figure it out.

Use you tube and link to it.

What do I need to do to load a video on here or even a sound file if that? All I'm seeing on the list of valid files are picture files.

I just read your last sentance about youtube. I'll do that.

The video sounded normal, to me. If the noise you are hearing sounds like marbles in a coffee can, check the balancer and drive pulley. Once the rubber goes away, it will sound like that.

Thanks. Balancer appears to be good. Pulley is new.

I had a bad fan clutch that sounded like a bucket of rocks in a washing machine. Just grab the fan blades and see if you can rock the fan shaft side to side.

I agree with Maverick, the engine sounds like a normal 6.5 in the video.

Recordings can be deceiving and add or subtract sounds that the human ear can pick out.

Got an idea.

With the engine warm.

Glove up and place a hand on the metal heat shield that is on the back of the turbo housing and see if this kills the noise.

Any luck figuring it out

You know, when the rod nuts start falling off, they can cause rattle. Little kids sometimes drop gravel down the oil fill tube to see where it goes too.
My daughter once, about 25 years ago, filled my snow blower crank case with dirt. Was worth it now for the story...

I did notice the heat shield was making a rattle noise due to it being broken around the bolt in the back of the turbo but but I couldn't get it to quite rattling completely by just putting my hand on it and I don't know if that was the only thing causing a rattle. Haven't really looked into it any more. Maybe I'll remove the shield to see if the noise goes away. Engine runs good though.
