I've read through several posts about the date stamps and casting numbers. I have yet to find my casting number but I did find something that could possibly be a date stamp? It's on the driver's side right above the oil filter. Looks like it reads "J 16"? Supposedly this is an NA 6.5L Goodwrench engine, my guess is an earlier one as it has the v-belt system. Thoughts?

I was just able to find my casting number, like it says "12555506", so I have a 506 block....

From what I have read, I would say it is unlikely that the first photo is the date stamp. It seems the date stamp is supposed to be on the passenger side , But I have not located it yet.

Thank you, I'm reading through it again. I found the date stamp but it's hard to make out. Perhaps someone with a better set of eyes can take a guess? From what I can tell, it looks like "H126" or "CH126"

The belt system is dependent on the year of the vehicle the engine is in, and not the year of the engine. For instance, the 1982-1987 square body style trucks will all have V-belts from the factory, regardless if the engine has been replaced. Normally, if a 6.2L is replaced with a 6.5L, all of the original accessories and belt drive system will be swapped over to the new engine.

I’m going to say H126 - August 12, 1996.

I’m going to say H126 - August 12, 1996.

So that is what I was thinking as well, but, from what I've read the 506 didn't come into production until 1997. Unless they started production early in late 1996? If it is 1996, what does that indicate as far as the quality of the engine?

I'll be resealing the valve covers and oil pan soon, will look for main web/bearing cracks ...

The 506 blocks seem to be well regarded. I’m thinking that the ’97 would match up with the ’97 model year - which starts late in ’96.
