In my search for a new to me truck, I was wondering if mechanically the LBZ is more desirable than the LLY. I know the LBZ has a higher torque and Hp rating, but I am finding more LLY's from 05 than I am LBZ's from 06. Would an LLY with some mods do as well as an LBZ? If I have a choice between a lower mileage LLY and a higher mileage LBZ that costs a few thousand more, is it worth it to get the LBZ?

I think a better understanding of the model years and powertrain designations may be in order. They are not all created equal. The LBZ is, hands down, the better option. However, the 2006 LLY (Classic, early builds) are LBZ, with the only differences being cosmetic and programming (2005 LLY power specs, but the same mechanicals as the LBZ). The additional advantage to the 2006+ LLY/LBZ is the 6-speed Allison not available on 2005 and earlier trucks. In my opinion, the 2007 Classic (early model year build) is the best of them. The 2007.5 model year (the "new" Silverado/Sierra, of the time) began the era of DPF, which ended any new truck interest for me, and the restrictive requirements in CA adds significantly to that.

Scooby,
Jim did an article on this exact issue several years ago. I would suggest that you do a DP search for the article. I am sure it will help with your decision. My 2006 D/A, LBZ has by far been the best truck that I have ever owned. I personally would shop for a LBZ with the SIX SPEED Allison over the LLY with a five speed.
Good luck
John

I had a man walk up to me in a parking lot a few weeks back. He asked if my truck was a 2006. I said it was. He asked which engine. I said LBZ. He asked what I would take for it. I told him he couldn't afford it.

We both smiled, shook hands and he left.

Well, I listened and found a 2007 LBZ with (UGH) 240k on the clock. More miles than I would have liked, but for what I need the truck for it should do quite nicely. I got it for $1000 more than the 05 LLY I was looking at. The 05 had 225k on it, so I dont think I did too bad. It was not easy. Trucks in Florida go fast. Dealerships here dont sell the older trucks. They send them to auction and the used car lots get them. From what I have seen, I should have paid 5-6k more for this truck. I got lucky and caught it before the dealership sent it to wholesale. Hopefully it does OK.

I intend for my LBZ to be passed on to my daughter/son in law. I bought it new and I'm keeping it until........

Do you think it will last another 20 years?
