HI guys have a question I need help with. I have a 1993 Chevrolet tow truck with the 6.5L turbo that has a blown headgasket. I have a 1994 Z71 with the same engine the difference is that my tow truck has a mechanical injection pump and the Z71 is electronic. Can I used the engine from the Z71 and put my IP on that engine. Also what changes would I have to make.

You’d have to swap all the electronics over to the ’93 along with injector lines and sort out the transmission control if it is an automatic.

Since my pump is mechanical I won't need the computer from the donor correct. Alos I have a manuel transmission. Thanks

Yes, but you’re using the electronic pump from the ’94 - right? So you have to swap all the electronics along with it.

Are both trucks manuals?

Sorry. Re-read your initial post. The first time I read it I thought you were saying you were swapping the pumps when you said you’re swapping the engines.

So, yes, the blocks will swap. But unless things were damaged, less work to replace the headgasket.

Actually I am using the mechanical pump from the 93 on the 94 that has the electronic pump. Thought about headgasket fix but engine has some blow bye so figuring a good topend would just hurt the bottom end.

So you’re moving the IP from the ’93 vehicle to the ’94 vehicle?

Welcome aboard!

Simply, yes.

No changes. Use the 94 long block and swap over all the fuel/air systems, accessories, etc. from the 93 block to the 94 block. The long blocks themselves are 100% interchangeable in the direction you are going. For future reference, be sure to use a balancer for the 94 application, on the 94 block. It is highly recommended to just replace it during the swap, if it isn't already fresh. Fluidampr (.com) is recommended, but will cost more.

Note: (not to complicate it, but for future reference)
Going the other direction is a bit different. The 94+ requires the crank position sensor in the timing cover, and the correct reluctor/balancer. Leaving them in place for MFI use doesn't hurt anything, but the sensor may leak engine oil if damaged/failed.

Yes, that my plans for the 93 IP.

DMax, I do have to switch my intake off the 93 to the 94 engine when changing injection pump correct?

It depends. If you are using an engine from a LD (1500, 2500LD, VIN S, RPO L56), and installing it on a HD (2500HD, 3500, VIN F, RPO L65), you do. If the applications are the same, the manifolds can be used on either. I may be wrong about that, though. All the trucks of those years I've worked on were CA smog. Some fed's may be different.

IIRC, all '93's were HD whereas the Z71s were all LD. The LD manifold will work, but it's choked up compared to the HD, and has the EGR valve to boot. (In other words, you could probably make it work but wouldn't want to.)

Thanks guys I appreciate the replies. Keep them coming. Is there anything else I should know?

Which injector lines I need to use,the one from the 1993 mechanical or can I use the 94 with electric pump.

Hi
The lines always have to go with the pump,so in your case the use the ones from the 93 pump.

Finally made the swap, was hard to start but got it started now seems to run good. Thanks for the help.

Anyone in the NC area that needs a electronic IP. with intake and lines.
