What is a good interval to change oil. Presently using 15w40, would consider syn 5w40.
How often do the 18 wheelers change there oil and what filtration differences are installed on there rigs? I understand the capacity in higher.....

There is no comparison. 10 qts. vs. 10 gallons, completely different engine designs and operating parameters, and completely different usage.

REAL synthetic oil (Mobil, Amsoil, Redline, Royal Purple, etc.) can extend service intervals 50-100%. The rest should be changed according to mfg. suggested use interval. Environmental and duty conditions should decide that. Improved oil filtration (duals, bypass, etc.) can help extend further, but not nearly as much as it's marketed. Extended service intervals is ecological, though.

I use 15-40 dinosaur oil and change it when the DIC asks me to, about every 10K. Keep in mind that if you start to use synthetic oil you'll see every tiny leak in your engine and judging by your posts that might bother you a bit.

On my LB7, I've been predominantly running the T6 Rotella (5W-40) and change the filter every 4K, oil and filter every 8K. Lab tests have not indicated any coolant, water or fuel in my oil. Been running this for about 14 years now; 400,700 miles- not seeing any leaks or problems.

Mobil Delvac 1 5w40 every 10k on the tens works for me. I'm sure I could go longer and I have gone 12k+ but the 10 on the 10's is easy to remember.

Yeah. That's pretty much what I do. No regrets. No issues.

Rotella here and change it and the filter every 5,000. Maybe a little overkill, but cheaper than a new engine. No synthetic either. 160,000 so far.

Figuring out what the best oil drain/filter change interval might be depends on how you use your truck and how long you tend to keep a vehicle.

If you work your truck hard in either extreme heat or extreme cold, choosing a quality synthetic is a no-brainer.

If you tend to trade vehicles every 5 or less years, using synthetic is just helping the next owner - assuming synthetic actually provides less wear over time (I think it does). Same goes for shortening the factory recommended service intervals.

The only "must" here is that you must service the vehicle according to the factory recommended service intervals (or more often) using spec/certified products to maintain the factory warranties.

I changed my oil/filter with Rotella yesterday. I had gone over my 5,000 internal by 350 miles. I hope the engine doesn't completely disintegrate as a result (smile). During the past 5,000 miles I did tow heavy about 3,000 of it. I know I heard the engine sigh when I first started it with the new oil/filter in it or maybe that was me? Who knows.

I change my oil every 5k or 6months whichever comes first. I like using Mobil.

Some controversy as to whether Mobil 1 oils are a true synthetic. I use them in all but my Dmax in which I use Mobil 1300. I've had no problems and also use Mobil filters.

I used to follow the oil discussions in the early days over on bobistheoilguy.com and back then it was commonly understood that M1 base stocks were "true synthetic" GROUP IV PAO. So when I saw your post I did some google searches and was surprised to find that apparently M1 had began utilizing group III base stocks in their formulations. The following thread is one example of discussions on this topic..

Given M1's reputation as a quality lube I'm not sure this isn't a good development.. seems like UOA results with these lubes would be the test to say good or bad..

The article was an eye opener. How can the consumer tell what Mobil 1 oil is a "Visom", grpIII PAO or grpIV/V? Is there an explanation on the bottle or some other indication as to what I am buying? This is very confusing.
