I have a 94 GMC with the 6.5 engine. Can some of the members share what might be involved to make this thing run without any electronics?

Of course the pump would have to be changed. Is there a pump calibrated to run with no electronics and retain the turbo?
I also assume the transmission would have to be replaced to a non electronic version.

What else will need to be done to retain good function and drivability?

Good reading!

Was there ever a 4L80 trans that didn't use electronics? I know the 700R4 is a common swap, but I would prefer something with more "beef".

The 700R4 evolved into the 4L60/70 and the 4L80 is a variation on that which is capable of handling more torque and horsepower.

The THM400/3L80HD was the heavy duty non-electronic version of the Turbo Hydra-Matic - but was a three-speed.

You could go to a manual transmission such as the NV4500.
