I am having a problem checking the braided ground that is near the downpipe. It appears to go from the frame to somewhere on the block. As luck would have it I have never had the motor out so it's hard to tell where it's connected to the block. Maybe I should just ignore the braided one and install a new ground of my own?

That braided wire mounts to frame from the firewall . If you take off the inner fender liner you should see a screw or hole in top of the frame about centre area of the block , near front of the starter. It is a real bi--h to get at, you could just run another ground to the frame somewhere easier to get to.
