I'm new here and wanted to contribute my intake mods I did to my old 6.2 round filter setup.

Firstly it never came with a seal between the intake manifold and the bottom of the filter housing. so I bent up the metal locating tab and used a length of 1/4 vacuum tube and use a razor blade to cut it lengthwise down one side, pay attention to not cut yourself and keep the cut straight to ensure an even seal. Make sure the tube is long enough that it touches end to end once you fit it over the lip of the bottom of the housing.

You may have to squeeze it on there or adjust the shape of the housing but it will fit snug, then put your filter in and snug down the lid while keeping pressure so it doesn't come loose while tightening.

Next I found a silicone air filter adapter that fits and flares out to include a bell mouth adapter you could fit an extra intake filter onto In case of dusty or extra dirty environments.

The small end of the silicone adapter is 80mm and the wide side is 105mm.

I never ran it with the second filter as I didn't see the need.

But it sure sounded good and probably has better flow characteristics than a stubby oval inlet by itself.

There is a gasket available for between the air cleaner housing and the intake manifold. It's made by felpro, PN 60555.

That's an idea to keep dirt out.

Another tip, always use the air filter that has the foam pre-cleaner on it. I prefer the Purolater air filter as it's the same as the ACDelco unit.

Yep it has the foam pre filter it was just cropped out of the filter, and yes it is supposed to come with one but mine was missing and I had vacuum tube layig around so it was free.

I had an extra air filter housing so I cut one apart and welding it to the bottom of the other, fabricated an air inlet(twice as large as factory). I ordered a custom sized amsoil airfilter with foam racing prefilter. This is all attached to a ram air snorkel similar to yours that gets air from lower in the grill area. It works so well that in winter I have to bypass it because it lowers my engine temp by about 15 degrees.

That sounds pretty cool! Ha! I'd like to see it, do you have any pictures?

Lee Swanger did something similar and has a write-up about it in the 6.2L literature that the site sells. A search on "swanger air" may pull something up as well. IIRC he originally used two filters stacked and then finally had someone custom make him one.

I *THINK* they were Olds 442 filters from the info and images found here:

From Lee Swanger/Clevite Kid:: (http://www.thedieselpageforums.com/tdpforum/showpost.php?p=52438&postcount=9) To make a "Swanger Air" system, you take the stock air cleaner housing and split it in two horizontally. Then you wrap it with a band of steel to raise the top 2 inches higher than it was, and stick it all together. TIG welding would be elegant, but I used Pop rivets and epoxy. This will now hold a pair of 14" x 3" filters, or one 14" x 6" Amsoil filter - my current setup.

Cut a big hole (about 4" x 7") in the side of the stretch housing facing the bracket for the discarded "acorn trap" and make a snorkel that covers the big hole and attaches to the acorn trap bracket. Punch out the pre-positioned 4" hole in the radiator support and run a 4" hose from the snorkel to just behind the grille. And you are done.

My system was a copy of Dr.Lee's....just a little bit shorter. Got the idea from his story.
I sued the precut hole in the Radiator header that DR.Lee talks about.
There is actually one on each side so it is very possible to make a dual inlet system.
I found the snorkel fittings and hose on Ebay.
I will try to post some pictures this weekend.
I have been meaning to attach a pressure gauge to the system to see what it does at hyway speeds.

That's a sweet intake! Wish I would have seen that when I was making mine!
