2000 6.5L runs better with the AC engaged?

So my 2000 Chevy 2500 just gave me a weird problem/.... with the AC compressor engaged, the truck runs great. when the compressor disengages, the truck has a studdery idle. i can be driving, or idling and the problem persists.... i replaced the PMD 2 months ago because the truck wouldn't start. ran great after that until this...

Also if I put my foot to the floor getting on the highway , the truck had a very hard time getting past 2500 rpm. Lots of black smoke too

How have the steering and brakes felt? Any belt squeal?

I'd start investigating by removing the serpentine belt, and checking each pulley for smooth operation. I wonder if the AC compressor pulley's bearings are on the way out... or possibly an issue with the compressor clutch...
