View Full Version : 6.2 and manual in a suburban?

I've had a couple 6.2 suburbans and may end up with a gas powered suburban on my hands that I'll probably drop a 6.2 in. I've always been a fan of standard transmissions but I've noticed it seems that ALL Suburbans have automatics. Why is this? What challenges might be faced with putting a manual into a suburban? Thanks in advance.

It can be done.
Scrounge up the linkage for the clutch, the under dash rigging for the clutch pedal and related brackets from a pickup and your set.

The floor in the hump will need to be modified to allow the tranny to fit,

My shifter for my K-5 came out of a factory 4-speed Suburban. I know....odd duck there....

It's not complicated. I love the 4-speed behind my 6.2L. Really woke it up compared to the Turbo 400. Slushboxes got nothing on gears you command yourself.

The automatic used with the 6.2 was the 700R4 which many trashed and went to the 400. The main failure was the front band which usually failed from the lack of readjustment at 25,000 miles.
The 400 even though bullet proof, had no overdrive. The 700R4 has a 30% overdrive and lockup converter so a standard 3.08 axle runs at 2.70 in OD. It also has a lower first gear and better spacing for the diesel.
My 700R4 started slipping 25,000 miles after it was rebuilt. I put a Transgo shift kit in it and it still chirps the rear wheels going into 4th at 80, with over another 90,000 miles on it.
I don't know the ratio spacing on the straight but if it has OD it's a toss up.
The automatics are much cheaper to rebuild and unless one gets a kick out of changing gears, I'd rather have the 700R4.
