I just sold my chevy after find crack block after oil sample came back with coolant in oil.

What is the best cummings to looked for mileage? I would like something with mechanical pump.

Thanks

For mileage look for a pre-94 they had a lower power output and therefore a lower fuel consumption (some got around 24-25mpg for the 2wd). Howver, I drove a '94 HD (straight front axle) 2wd dually that got 20mpg loaded with tools if it was fed the right fuel...poor fuel got me around 16-17mpg.

I was vdery fond of my '98 12 valve... but if I were to buy another I would go for a 24 valve with a manual trans.
I like the acceleration of the 24v, and the reliability of the manual.
Mine had an automatic that never gave me any trouble, but it never "felt" right either. It didn't seem to shift consistantly, and it was mushy and soft. The stealership I took it to for service said it was fine, hunky dory and ready to go.

If fuel economy is the main focus, I have to also add that where I drove a '94 CTD, my boss had an '01 24v 6-sp and he averaged about 2-3mpg less than I did with probably a lighter right foot. I do know someone who claims 23-24mpg with an '03 6-sp.

If you are looking for price vs. performance your best bet would be to get a 96-98 12 valve. They had the bigger 215pump which is capable of alot of power one day if you so desire. Those years will also get the same fuel economy of the 94s but with much better power and upgradability!

My personal favorite is the 03+ 305/555 versions. They are quite awesome and trouble free. If not that, go 96-98 12 Valve.

Is there a shop that will put a Cummins in a Suburban? I would love to do the swap, but I couldn't do it myself. I would like to use a shop that does it on a regular basis.
