A few years ago I replaced my Land Rover Defender engine with a newly rebuilt 6.2L. The engine runs beautifully; however, because of the geometry of the motor it sets close to the starter motor and after an hour or so of running on a hot day the starter becomes very hot and if I stop and try to start the engine it will not start, I have to wait a while for the starter to cool off before it will be able to start the engine. I thought about wrapping the manifold with some of these insulating wraps, but it isn't enough room to do this with the engine in the vehicle. I also thought about a cooling fan of some sort that would start after the engine is shut off and would run until after the surface of the starter is reduced to a safe temperature. I haven't been able to find such a fan. There is already a homemade heat shield there now. If you have any suggestions for me, it will be much appreciated. Thank You for your time and input!

Had a similar problem on my GTO. I ended up finding an aftermarket smaller high performance starter...that fixed the problem.

Cheapest first.....
I would start by adding some thermal barrier/insulation to the heat shield that you already have. Summit automotive has allot of this type of stuff.

Maybe double the heat shield by installing something on the pipe as well. Any type of header tape/wrap you can squeeze in is going to help. Summit again.

In the case of the 6.2 I am not sure if a smaller starter is a viable option.
Have you ever replaced the starter...? It is possible that you have a weak starter that is heat sensitive.

Hope this helps, Good Luck!
