View Full Version : Will a 95 engine fit in a 98

hi there been reading here for a while and the site helped fix some of the issues with my 98, thank you. Now I have a more serious problem, the truck started using antifreeze a while back and I parked it thinking a head cracked or a bad headgasket, thinking it is fairly common. Now I took the heads off and everything looked normal, so I pulled the oilpan and all looked good too, untill I turned the engine by hand and a small drop of antifreeze appeared on the # 8 cylinder wall, I can actually see the crack. Now I found a 95 truck as a parts truck and my question is, will it drop right in, or do I have to change a bunch of things over? They both are "f" engines. Thanks and any info will help. Leo

Swap on the turbo and the upper intake from the 98 as they're better.

All the engine accessories and cooling system (thermostat housing and waterpump) from the 98 onto the 95

The oil pressure sender will plug in on the back of the engine verses on the valley that the 98 has. No biggie, there is plenty of wire.

Otherwise they're the same.

The only other obstacle you'll run into is the oil cooler lines. The 95 will have 3/8NPT connections on the block, the 98 will have 1/2NPT. The workaround here is to update your oil cooler lines to the hydraulic/stainless steel braided lines available at like Lubrication Specialists.

You won't have to swap the injection pump, or injection pump valley harness, they're the same.

thanks, going to look at it tomorrow, any thing special I should pay attention to in regards to the swap, I am pretty confident that I can make it work now, considering I dont have to deal with a ip swap which was my biggest worry. Could I use the 95 turbo, will the exhaust line up? I am not looking for power, just a reliable truck that will take me from a to b. I leave the towing to the D/A now.

Yeah, the turbo will line up fine.

I just mention the above because it's better to keep it all original equipment for later on down the road when you need a part.

That way you don't have to go, I need a waste gate actuator for a 1998 only to remember that, um, you need one for a 1995 cause that's the turbo you have.

It's a little more work to swap over the parts, but worth it in the long-run.

I did not see it mentioned.

The 95 engine has 3/8 NC threaded bolts in the bell housing and the stud topped ones are metric on top only. (What an abortion) :eek:

The 98 uses metric all the way.

No biggy, but don't try to use the ones from the 98 in the 95 block.

Be sure to check things as the "95 engine" may not really be a 95 engine.

Well I bought it and runs good, I have pulled the engine and got some questions, what to do with the exhaust manifolds, drivers side has one stud hole that is almost gone and passengers side is pitted badly, do I risk it and leave them or is replacing a must, do I pull the injectors or leave them, have about 330000km on it and look original. Where is a good place to get the manifolds, both economical and decent quality? I think I will take the injectors to a diesel injection shop and checked and maybe rebuilt. I am replacing all glowplugs. Is there anything I should be looking at besides this? thanks for all the pointers, it is greatly appreciated. Leo

I think the suggestion was, to use your original 98 engines' manifolds.

I am from ontario too, and i personally wouldn't touch the manifolds,. if they aren't leaking,. leave them be,..the rusty bolts and studs could turn out to be a nightmare. Let sleeping dogs lie,. so to speak.

if it runs well,.stuff the other engine in there, use the 98 turbo,. and drive on,,.

What is better about the upper intake on a 98 as opposed to other years?

I thought an F upper was an F upper. I didn't realize there were differences
