View Full Version : 6.5td swap quandary

Long story short, I ended up with 2 6.5td's, and I'm swapping them into a 70 chevy K10 pickup, and 70 GMC suburban. Both will have 5 speeds. Physically fitting the engine and tranny in place is an easy thing. However, one of my 6.5's is a 93 with a mech pump, and the other is a 94 with the electronic IP. The 93 is an easy swap, and its actually already in my truck. The 94 on the other hand is another issue. I bought the motor for cheap simply because it came with an NV4500. I grabbed the ECU, but I didnt grab the pedal and the harness was cut at the firewall. I would love to find a mech IP for this motor, but thats easier said than done. I'm trying to get in touch with the guy I bought the 94 from to see if he still has the rest of the truck, but its not looking good.

So what would be your guys suggestions? I'm not towing with either rig, these are being build as daily drivers. is there a cheaper source for a mech IP? I don't have the capital to spend $1000+.

What about a 6.2 pump? I do have a few of those. Thanks

Scare up a set of high pressure fuel lines from a 92-93 and the mech pump and your set.

Ditch the electronics and save yourself a buttload of grief.

6.2 IP will work, just turn the fuel screw inside the pump up about 1/4 to 1/2 turn.

Would the injector lines from the 6.2, or the electronic 6.5 work? I read somewhere that you just need to rebend them a little. I'm gonna run a Banks turbo manifold in the suburban to clear the heater core box.Im not sure if that matters. In the truck, I changed the box.

6.5 lines are proprietary to the electronic pump.

The 6.2 lines for the 90-92 6.2 will work, as will the lines from a 92-93 6.5 with mech pump

Olde lines may work with some slight tweeking.

Keep the lines in sets, dont mix and match as they varied slightly in length and they all need to be from the same set.

Every line is exactly the same length to keep cyl to cyl timing the same

This is why all the weird bends

The correct lines are available for nearly every conceivable combination of pump, heads and injectors (except one or two instances, but nothing you'll run into). I DO NOT suggest bending the lines, AT ALL. Use the set that fits. Bending them WILL lead to leaks and cracks. The lines should be installed absolutely stress-free, or they will crack and/or leak, sooner or later. The wrong set of lines will require a lot more than just a little "tweaking", so to speak. If you don't understand just how much stress these lines see in operation, stick your mechanic's stethoscope on a line while the engine is running. It's like a hammer on a steel beam, 5 times a second at idle.

Yeah, I know.... A lot of folks have done it, including me. If you do it, I hope your first indicator it went wrong isn't an engine compartment fire.

Well I got a call a little bit ago from the guy I bought the 94 from. Hes still got the cab. The pedal assembly and harness are still there. Would it be worth the hassle to stick with the electronic IP? Im not afraid of a little wiring. The truck it originally came out of was a manual, so I got that going for me.

Somebody makes line adapters to go from DS4 to DB2 but I can't remember who it is.

There are military pumps on there quite often,you just have to change the shutoff solenoid.
The last one i bought was under $150. for a brand new 6.5 pump ,most of them have porcelain plungers because they have to be able to run them on jet fuel.No core required.
I wouldn't bother with the electronic pump,and i belive the 94's have their own set of problems.
One of my pumps is waiting to replace the electronic one in my tow truck.

Ive got another 6.2, that is a really good bottom end, but I pulled the heads for my blazer. Could I put 6.5 heads on it, with my banks turbo manifold and a stock 6.5 turbo? How would that work? The 6.2 has a good pump and lines on it.

Yes, you could do that but why in the world would you want to use a GM turbo.

Mostly because I have 2 of them. I can upgrade it later. I just need to get the suburban on the road. I've found a few H1C's for a good price, and Heath Diesel has their turbo master wastegate control. And I'm using an NV3500 in the suburban, so I'm not gonna juice it up.

The H1C's are awesome and you don't have to worry about a wastegate.

Its hard to find one with the right turbine housing. They're usually too big.

It'll be fine. Ive seen a few behnd the diesels. And its going in a 2wd 1/2 ton that will NEVER tow anything.
