greetings. I have a '94 dually that has developed a compression on the wrong side of a piston condition. I have found a '96 4x4 2500 suburban with a bad trans for $1000. lots of good parts on it & owner swears the engine only has 750 miles on a re-fresh. so he says anyway. question is about using this engine in my '94. will the obd2 computer plug into the harness or am I in for a big re-wire job? I don't want to use the old pump & computer, it is the old funky code on the 1st series of pumps. thanks for any info from those that may have done this all ready

Big re-wire job. The electrical harnesses are very different, and the PCM connectors are not interchangeable. If you only replace the engine and keep your original electronics, including the IP, it's almost plug 'n play. Your 1994 PCM isn't compatible with the 96 injection pump. If you want to "convert" the 94 to 96 electronics/electrical, you'll need a complete harness assy, or deal with a nightmare, now and later. Electrical hack-jobs almost always come back to haunt you, and both electrical systems you are dealing with are already delicate as they are under the best of conditions.

An electrical harness R/R isn't all that bad, but it isn't for the faint of heart.

thanks, just like I thought. the old ip has over 200k miles on it. not much use in keeping it.

If it were me, I would replace the tired pump with a fresh one for the 94 and avoid all the potential problems of a re wire. Something about the KISS theory. ;)

Or, use a 1995 computer. Same as the 94, without the pump compatibility issues.

An aftermarket reflashed prom would also do away with the IP problem and get you a custom tailored tune for your needs.
