Hey guys, New to this page, obviously I am here because I now own a Diesel. 1986 Suburban 4x4 Needs some work, but thats to be expected. Needs a tranny, starter, and some General TLC. Plans include body work, Bedliner EVERYWHERE! Want a reliable boat hauler, capable of some light wheeling.

Welcome. How big is your boat? I towed my father in laws 25' sailboat about 5 times back and forth to the marina in Rode Island, up and down some hi-way hills, and my little 6.2 had to run @ 110% to accomplish this task. And to be honest, it didn't like it very much. (Quite a few popped head gaskets.)

Hopefully your boat won't be to this extreme. Good luck with it.

Won't be that big, looking more into the ski boat type. 18-20 foot likely. Not to many hills in Oklahoma to contend with. Fairly sure this 6.2 will keep up, if not, all the more reason to do a 5.9 cummins swap. Muhahaha.

Welcome to TDP :D

We owned an 86 burb back in the day.
Very good rig, got great mpg and was very reliable.

We put nearly 300k miles on it between 87 and 94

After looking around, and seeing some of the VAST knowledge on here, I do believe I will be having the 700R4 that I haverebuilt, with some upgrades. ;) Waiting on a quote from Blumenthals in OKC, as they have the best rep from friends, I have a shade tree buddy who works for ATC Transmissions, but Blumenthals warranty is golden.

My boss used to be an auto body guy, we have a welder, grinder, and the know how, the three cancer spots will be remedied just as soon as I can get this Burban running, hard to do when your in Houston for three weeks. lol. Ohh well adequate time to do research.

Depending on what you are going to bolt in front of it, don't skimp on the upgrades.

A 700R is a very tiny tranny, not outwardly, but inside.
The clutches, sprags, planetaries ect are very small compared to the TH400-4L80 boxes

The main clutch drum in a 700 is aluminum and the input shaft is splined and pressed into the drum. The drums crack then its game over.

The 2-4 bands snap.
The LU converters are very small inside and the clutches go south.

The trannies are great in a camaro, astro van and small rigs, but behind anything of substance, they need help.

I have read those same words by you several times in doing research, I plan on running the 6.2 in front of it, Eventually I would love to cummins swap it, and Obviously trade out trannys then. But in the mean time, I think the built 700r4 will be adequate, At the very least, Warranty ;)

A warmed over and beefed 700 will handle the 6.2 fine.
The 6.5 turbo will tax it to the limit unless you spend serious $$$$$

The Cummins would have it for lunch :eek:

If you decide on a Cummins, use the Mopar 4 speed auto that has the full hydraulic controls.

A local fellow has a 4BT in a 95 Burb with the Mopar box behind it and it is sweet.

If you use the 6 cyl, then even the mopar box needs some goodies to make it better.

I shall! Cannot wait to tear into it, Will be back home Saturday, My starter bracket and bolts are "on order" with GMpartsdirect. SO I have a bout a month to wait, lol. Ohh well, gives me plenty of time to tear off exterior trim, Prep body work, drain the diesel tank, Replace passenger rear door window, All before I get it started. :D
