Hey all, names Chris. let me tell right off the bat, i don't exactly have a diesel truck. I do have a 6.5 diesel engine OUT OF a 93 K3500 though
Im looking into trans options. I don't want to go with the 80E because its big and heavy and overkill for my application. I would like to go with a 60E or 700r4 or a 5spd if i go manual.
they all come with there own challenges
did the 92-93 6.5s come with 60Es? how available are they?
any help will be much appreciated

Welcome aboard, Chris!
The 4L60E was available in some light duty 1/2 tons (1500 series), non turbo, 1992+. All 6.5L TD's were equipped with the 4L80E (or manual tranny).
Again, WELCOME ABOARD :D:):D
The problem you run into is that the 6.5 will pretty well chew up a 60E or a 700r unless you spend some serious $$$$$ on internal upgrades.
The 700r was used behind the 6.2 non turbo for years in light duty apps.
A choice you may want to consider is the TH400 as its non electronic and a bit lighter than the 80E
If you need the Overdrive then the options get far less.
To make a 700r live behind a 6.5TD is possible, but plan on spending about a grand $$$$$ on parts and if you can't do the bench work yourself then double the $$$$$
The 700R is just way too small internally and has several serious issues that must be fixed in order to make it a serious player.
For a Jeep or small rig the 700R can be reworked to handle the task easily, but a larger rig, you really need a much bigger gear box.
Tell us a bit more about what rig you are putting this engine in.

Feel free to call me crazy but its going in a 87 Camaro with a firebird front end in a post apocalyptic themed project im doing called PROJECT: crossbreed it won't be hauling anything really but I do plan on it having dual rear wheels
I know im going to get crap back about my idea and that's fine but just remember I am here asking about tranny options for now, not if putting a 6.5 in a muscle car is a good idea
Sounds like a fun project.
A 700R that came from a V8 will likely do fine.
Install a shift kit at the very least and you should be ok with that small rig.
Keep us posted, pix would be great too.
Good luck

Yeah i have been leaning towards the 700r4 also but unsure how to hook it up. will the bracket for the tv cable off a 6.2 work properly on the 6.5?
also what about the torque converter lockup?

I run the 700R4 behind a 6.2 in my Toyota Landcruiser FJ60. If your IP does not have the linkage arm to attach to the TV cable linkage? You should be able to pull it off an earlier IP? I had my 700R4 built to Robin's spec. I run manual toggles for OD and 2-3 lock up. I had planned to turbo the 6.2 but it has plenty of power to pull the cruiser. The 6.2 has no problem revving and the 700 holds the shifts when you need to make a little smoke and get a move on into traffic or just want to clean out the exhaust.
Good luck. Jim
