Hi,

I'm new to the forum. And have searched and searched but haven't found a good answer for the problem I am having. I have a 92 chevy 1/2 ton 6.2L Non-Turbo. It starts great, shifts great, and runs great except for one thing. Whenever I accelerate aggressively it sputters and spits smoke, loses power. Whenever I let off the accelerator it comes right out of its fit and runs fine. What could be causing this? Also the service engine soon light is on it will turn off sometimes during operation but usually no longer then 10 or 15 seconds. I flashed the code and got DTC-22. I've found that this is either TBS circuit or Accelerator Pedal Positioning circuit. Any help?:confused:

Thank You :cool:

Anybody?

Manual or Elec IP???? If a manual pump, might need to advance the timing a little ( turn pump a tad bit towards the drivers side ).. might be fuel filters a little plugged up, Elec IP also might need to be timed, you will need a scanner to do that if electric IP system....

Give us more info on your truck, it will help us out some....

Hi thanks for the response. The specs on my engine say it is a manual rotary pump. I looked at it under the hood and it looks just like this one. http://www.ebay.com/itm/6-2L-Chevy-GM-6-2-GMC-6-2-HD-Diesel-Injection-Pump-/330808744922?pt=Motors_Car_Truck_Parts_Accessories&hash=item4d05bcdbda&vxp=mtr

It's automatic transmission. 4spd overdrive.

Thank you

If your 1992 is original, it's mechanical. Electronics didn't come onto the scene until the 1994 M/Y.

It could be a timing issue, but sounds more like fuel starvation, air intrusion, or possibly an air restriction. Check your fuel supply system, including the filter(s), lift pump, lines, and fuel filler cap (if it doesn't vent properly, it slows fuel delivery). Check/replace your air filter, and verify the plumbing is healthy and unobstructed. If your fuel filler cap is original, or old, replace it, and make sure it is a "Diesel Fuel Only" type. Gasser caps don't vent the Diesel systems properly.

The DTC 22 is likely related to the low power, with the tranny controller not seeing an anticipated power level for the given throttle position. This is typical of the 4L60E tranny, and can be easily reproduced with a plugged fuel filter, failed lift pump, or air restriction. The black smoke may indicate any of the above.

Also.....

The DTC 22 could be EGR related. The 8th digit of the VIN will indicate if it has EGR or not. C = EGR. J = no EGR. This could also cause the low power, miss, and smoke (O2 starvation). The EGR should only engage at/near zero throttle input. If the TPS is bad, it may have a dead-spot, causing EGR activation at higher throttle inputs. You can disable the EGR (for testing purposes) by removing/plugging the vacuum line to the pod (canister in the intake). Repeat the acceleration. If it doesn't sputter/smoke, then it's the likely suspect.

Thank you everybody for the answers. They are very helpful. I think I may have solved the problem. With....(drum roll please)... a new fuel filter. Haha. However, the check engine light is still on. This engine does have an EGR. I took the air cleaner off and the intake is just filthy. I mean it is disgustingly dirty in the intake. From the reading I have learned that is caused from the EGR. Will the dirty intake cause me problems down the road?? I want to get a non-EGR intake for it as soon as I can. AND Now I have discovered another problem. I have a fuel leak coming from one of my injectors. Does this mean I will need to replace the fuel injector?

Thanks again everybody

Where is the leak???? the line going to the top is the in side, that nut should be tight, just put a wrench on them all and make sure they are tight. There is also the 2 return side nipples, they should all have small lines on them..

Fixed the leak. Fuel line needed tightened. I flashed the codes and this time it showed 12. So I reset the ECM started it up. CES light came back on. Shut engine off. Turned key on. Flashed codes and got 12,21,33,32. Confused....

DTC's:

12 = Only means the diagnostic process is functioning.

21 = APP circuit high.

32 = EGR circuit error.

33 = EGR Barometric pressure circuit high.

Sounds like you have a loose connector or a lost ground. Check the harness from the sensors to the ECM. If you eliminate your EGR, you can pull the IPC bulb or snip the signal wire (for testing purposes or off-highway use only). It only signals errors in the emission system.
