Does the engine seem like it is overheating?

Does the upper radiator hose get hot? Does the lower radiator hose at least get very warm?

Point being: Is your water pump moving any water?

The first sign I had that my pump had spun loose from its drive gear was that the heater wasn't blowing any heat. The second sign was that the engine temp got WAYY hot. The third sign was that the coolant started blowing out the overflow tube. What should've clued me in to its not being a head gasket problem was the lack of residual pressure in the cooling system after the engine cooled down.

then again, it could just be a bad heater hose valve...

I had that problem on an 05 Chev 2500 HD Duramax and it was an easy fix but don't remember what the fix was. Try cycling through hot and cold.
