I am interested in swapping a "red block" 6.2 into a Safari van originally equipped with a 4.3 V6 (See my thread "Latest FNG - Need Advice")...

Some have said engine weight and weight distribution is a concern... my sources indicate the 6.2 weighs 700 lbs versus the 4.3's 530 lbs... Is this correct? If there truly is only 170 lbs difference, I may not even have to crank up my torsion bars...

700lbs is what I've been working with for a 6.2 long block in my Toyota FJ40 swap.

A bare longblock weighs approximately 700-lbs. Fully dressed it'll weigh 8-something, depending on the accessories chosen. The published weight for a late 1990s 6.5TD, as used in a pickup or Suburban, is about 835-lbs if I remember correctly.

Coincidentally, or not, the Duramax was designed to closely match that operational weight figure.

That's surprising. For some reason I was under the impression that the DMax was quite a bit more hefty.

from what i have seen a marine 4.3 weighs in at about 485 and that includes heaver exhaust manifolds. At 530 there counting everything so with the 6.2 you really need to use the 800+ number and then add for the larger radiator engine oil cooler etc. and greater fluids another 50 to 75 lbs. Now you are looking at almost twice the weight of a 4.3 in reality. Those that have replaced a 350 v8 with a 6.2 know that there is a substantial weight difference. Just pickup a 4.3 head and a 6.2 head and it is obvious which one you want to carry around.

Aluminum heads and accessory brackets... ;)
