View Full Version : Ratio Info
I have a 1997 1500 suburban 6.5 diesel. It has all the same specs as a 2500 except for the gear ratio which is 3.42:1. I am towing a 8000 lb travel trailer so I need to change the ratio to 410:1 to get my max. trailer Wt. higher. I also drive 100 miles a day back and forth to work at 80 to 85 mph(I live in Jersey). I am not worried about mpg but I do not know how much top endI am going to lose with this change. Please help.

Plug in your tire diameter, final drive ratio and cruise rpm or speed to figure out the difference at this URL: Gear Calc (http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=2431352492&ssPageName=ADME:B:SS:US:1)

How about putting your money on an intercooler and free flow exhaust system. You will get pulling power, a more reliable engine, AND fuel economy. :D
You and your engine won't be happy running 2900 rpm @ 85 mph with the 4.10 diff. The increase noise and vibration is not pleasent, and the engine is way out of it's torque curve.
You will add value to your truck too, what the gear change doesn't.
Rather than change axle ratio one option would be to install a under/overdrive that way you have the best of both worlds.

that's what i'm looking at. a gearvendor overdrive so i can cruise 75-80 yet still have gearing for pulling if need be.alot more than gear change but will definately up the resale value.
