Hi, I would like to switch to synthetic oil (rotella?) befoe a trip to the frozen North,as many on this page swear by its improvement in cranking speed.Since I changed my oil less than 800 miles ago, could I just dump whats in the pan, leave the filter and refill? Ive heard its ok to mix,but not sure.Want to keep time spent on my back in my cold muddy driveway to a minimum! What weight is good, when I return to western Washington,It will be in the 40* f. range.Rig has 147,000 and uses 1 qt between 3000 mi. changes.....thanks much, GB

Howdy
I live in northern Minnesota. I only run Synthetic in the COLD winter months. Mobil 1 5-40 is what I use and It does make a difference. It also finds ANY/ALL leaks that I have. The leaks go away as soon as I switch to regular Mobil in the summer. Also I would tough it out and slap a new filter on her. :D Five minutes in the mud is worth 3000 miles of peace-of-mind! ;)
Have fun!

It is OK to mix the Synthetic RotellaT with the standard RotellaT. Leaving the filter should be no problem if you've only run it for 800 miles.

You will lose alot more than a quart between changes. I second any error in sleeve will burn the oil quick. If you loose that much now you will triple the loss.

I use Esso (Exxon) 0W-40 year round here in
Alberta. Never needed to add any oil between changes.. goes down maybe half a quart. Our temps range from -40 to +39C.

My oil consumption drops with the synthetic as compared to conventional.
