2-stroke Diesel making a comeback?

I was recently alerted to a unique diesel engine design that increases fuel efficiency by 20% or more, significantly reduces the weight/size of the engine and has tremendous power potential.

Hofbauer has been trying to float this boat since the mid 70s. The idea is not new, but he is experiencing the same issues that plagued Napier and Colt Peelstick. That is, combustion sealing and coolant sealing. Imagine trying to seal that outer, saddle, con-rod :eek:

The Deltics (Napier) (my sig) all leaked like they were mugged until they came up to temperature and even then, they still lost about a quart of coolant an hour. Peelstick solved the probelm years ago, but they only used two crankshafts.

Incidentially, the new PC60s used in ships have achieved the best specific fuel consumption of any in their class (.23 lbs. per shp) and currently meet all the pollution regs WITHOUT the need of a computer. Just a high pressure common rail and electrical triggering. A lot to be said of a 2 stroke.

Shared combustion chamber designs have been around since the 20s and vitually every combination of crankshafts, 1/2 shafts and through shaft designs have been tried with pretty much the same results. The Napier Deltics, the Colt Peelsticks and the Fairbanks Morse multi crank designs were the only success stories.

One of my desires is to have the time and resources to take the Deltic design and make a 2 bank, 12 Piston, 6 cylinder, 300 cubic inch engine that you could put on your foot stool (about 14 inches by 14 inches). If you made it a sleeve valve engine, it could even be a 4 stroke. With todays metallurgy it might be possible.

Anyways, interesting engine. Hope he finally gets it to work.

Missy sits with an ear to the wind, for the lovely sounds of the 8V92T detroit.

Probably one of the greatests amounts of power offered in a small package.

With there exhaust routed through good quality mufflers, they were very quiet and smooth.

Mileage and Horse power was dependant on how big of squirts ya stuffed in the little beasts.

The Detroit 2 stroke was fitted to trucks, buses, tractors, earth movers and all manner of stationary machinery.

Wonder if this new idea could ever equal that feat.

Available in 1 cylinder to 16 cylinders (that I have seen) Possibly 24

Lovingly refered to with such terms as "Double Breasted Yamaha's" "Buzzin dozen" and other phrases. (And depending, maybe not so friendly phrases)

When the Road ranger tranny hit the market, the comments were that a Detroit and a Ranger were a match made in heaven. Quick up quick down.

It would be great to see someone reintroduce a good two stroke diesel in a small powerful package.

Saw a Michigan loader set up with a 4 pack of 871's (2 end to end v16) and those two side by side. Sure had a sweet sound to it. Wouldn't want to try to find a miss in it though!

SS40 Yuclid scrapers ran 12v92's with an Alison trans. What a bark!

We have a old Road Boss 2 with the 8v92t i love that motor ! sounds great lots of power . We also have several other DDs 453n ...371n and a 671n all run great and theres nothing like the sound of a 2 stroke diesel :D
Was talking to an old fella that worked on DD for a living an he said that you could hang a picture of a detroit on the wall and by morning there would be a puddle of oil on the floor ...i belive him after being around all of them we have :eek:
