hey guys. all of a sudden truck shut off 5 minutes after starting it
so i could go to work. it started up really easy, temp outside about 40 degrees. i didnt let the engine warm up. i started up my driveway
and got about 250 feet and motor shut off while i had my foot on fuel
pedal. it slowly lost power and died like it was out of fuel.
its a 98 k3500 4x4 auto 6.5 turbo diesel 175,000 miles. fuel filter
replaced about a month ago. i had surges and missing a few days
before while i was running 65 to 70 . my oil pressure was 55 cold
40 at 65mph 30 at idle. can someone help me . its my only work
truck

thanks alot steve linwood n.carolina

Check the lift pump and be sure you have fuel coming to the IP.

The filter is always suspect in these cases. you could have picked up some crappy fuel.

with turbo in the way.
thanks a bunch

If you bleed all the injectors on the driver's side, she should start but with some coughing. The air will leave from the passenger side eventually. Just keep your foot on the pedal to keep it idled up a bit.

Oh and make sure you have fuel in your tank. Just went through your same symptoms a month ago. After some hours of diagnosing the filter, pump, and lines, I found the problem to be a bone dry tank.

There is your problem - bolded for assistance. Your pump may be making noise, but it is not doing what it is supposed to do. Either no fuel is getting to the pump, or no fuel is coming out of it.

Hi Fixit
How old is your PMD/FSD?And what make?
I'v had two of the Dtech,s start bucking, and jerking,Mine started on deceleration, then progresivly got worse till i changed to a known good spare.

im not sure what pmd or injector pump i have. but my service engine
light is on. i ran the codes and its turbo boost sensor code. i have a exhaust leak underneath truck. i checked westgate operation and
have good vaccum. i ordered a new sensor. i read that if the computer
has a boost sensor code it will restrict fuel from injector pump to engine.
i think this may be my surge and putt putt problem. i will give update
after i replace sensor and drive it for awhile

thanks for the help everybody

The boost code has nothing to do with the jerking and stumbling.

My suspicion is that the PMD is taking a dive.

Get a fresh Dtech on a cooler thats remote mounted, this should make it all well again.

My first thoughts were the filter harness, but you have a later truck that does not have that.

Replace the PMD, be sure to install a resistor (use a #5) in the PMD harness plug port.\\

The resistor will only fit one way.

The other posibility on the stumbling is AIR getting into the system.

Install a clear tube on the return line from the IP (just make a loop of some clear plastic tube and tie it to the IP and then to the existing return line.

Loop the line out and up by the wipers (leave the hood latched on the safety hook only to allow room for the tube by the cowl)

Run the rig and watch for air bubbles. GOT AIR, BAD NEWS. Find the cause.

It has to be PRE lift pump. Fuel line with a hole or a tank pickup with an issue.

i replaced the boost sensor on top of intake and ran the engine at idle for
about 30 mins and no ses light. yesterday i used it to jump my other
truck and after i let it idle for awhile it stumbled and missed for about
5 seconds and then ran normal. it looks like the original pump and pmd
i dont have the numbers off the pump, but pmd looks like standyne.
so you guys think i need pmd? thanks for all the help
happy turky day to you all

If that is the Original PMD or at least one thats been on there a long time, its suspect.

I would invest in a new DTECH PMD and a remote wire harness (5 or 6 footer) and relocate the new PMD out of the engine bay.

Either down on the inside of the swingdown Skid/splash pan or in the grill area where you can get to it.

I prefer the down under location as the removal of just 2 bolts and the pan swings down.

Get a number 5 resistor to go with the PMD (inserts into the PMD plug port and will fit only one way. Just stuff it in and press it down in over the pins)

The SES light in your case likely has nothing to do with the stuble and quit.

Rarely does a failing/failed PMD set a code.

Good luck
