View Full Version : Oil filter relocation
I'm having a new flomaster crossover and downpipe getting ceramic coated. I have some time before the parts are ready and started wondering if I wanted to gather parts for relocating the oil filter when I take the old crossover out. I always have the lube places service the truck because it's impossible for me to change the filter as it is. Any thoughts (yay or nay) from someone whose done this? Have any parts suggestions? Tips?

I've done several on different vehicles. Mostly hotrods. I just replaced the engine in my truck and figured I would do the filters and leaky cooler lines also. I ordered the kits for both from Greg at Lube Specialists(?) He is a DP supporter and advertises here. The filter kit was about the best one that I've used and VERY complete and VERY high quality. I did the remote filter with a bypass filter. Another bonus is that you can normally use a bigger filter and increase your oil capacity. While you are doing it you should really think about the cooler lines also. I mounted the filters under the driver floor pan onto the inside of the frame.
The lines are close to the exhaust but I wrapped everything in heat shield.
Hope this helps!

Are the cooler lines difficult to replace? I've got what appears to be multiple oil leaks and would like to stop at least some of them. As it is I park over a catch-pan. I hate to admit it but there's little chance of anything rusting on my undercarriage..

It's a bit of a job, but can be done in an afternoon.
My advice:
THERE ARE THREE DIFFERENT O-RINGS NEEDED DON'T LET THE PARTS MAN CAUSE YOU A BAD HEADACHE.
Search here for notes from other people who have done it.
Wash the area first.

Chances are most of your leaks are coming from the cooler lines. Carey is 100% right, make the parts person get you the right o-rings for the factory oil filter adapter. Is your truck a 4x4? If not then I don't think it has a adapter for the filter. Before you wash underneath remove the skid plate and then soak everything down with degreaser and pressure wash the HE** out it! Even after that you WILL get greasy! To replace the lines you will need to remove the grill, might be a good time to remove the upper radiator shroud and pressure wash the radiator also. I can't tell you how long it took me to do it as I did it when the engine was out :D
Have fun!

If you use the relocation kit from Greg can you remove the adapter that sets the filter on it's side? This will eliminate one more spot for oil to leak from.

Yes, but you need to tell him that your want to do that prior to ordering. He can tell you what hardware you need.
