My 02 2500HD has developed a leak at the dip tube on the trans. I read somewhere about torque converter drain back and I'm wondering if this is what is happening. the leak only shows up once in a while and the leakage is fairly small. I noticed that the fluid level always shows to be in the "HOT" section of the dip stick.
Is this something I should be concerned about? I haven't had to add any fluid and the leak has occured severl times over the last 3 months.
Thanks for your help
Jack
also when the truck is idleing I can feel and heard a slight surgeing of the motor. How should I take care of this problem.
Hope I have posted in the correct area and not ask to many question
Thanks

The transmission fluid level should be checked with an idling warm engine (at or near operating temp), in Park. If it's "full-hot" when the tranny is cold, it is overfilled. If you are checking the level with the engine off or cold, you won't know if the level is correct. With the engine off, it is normal for the level to appear high, hot or cold. The fluid volume is large, so a small leak may not be noticed on the dipstick.
You could have an issue with the TC drainback, but it should not leak at the tube (it may leak at the vent, on top of the case). The drainback issue is usually accompanied with a failure to engage after a cold start, and the SES lamp and related DTC should be present. I suggest replacing the dipstick tube seal, and look into the replacement of the dipstick, according to a TSB regarding the need for a vented cap in some cases, if the issue continues. Also, check that the mounting tab on the dipstick tube is still in place and tight. If it's loose or off, vibration and/or movement could cause it to leak, or damage the seal.
An engine surge could be caused by a number of reasons. If it's a relatively new condition, start regular use of a quality "injector cleaner" fuel additive. Start with a double dose for a couple tanks, then continue indefinitely with a regular dose. Monitor it for change.
Thanks DMax. Just the info I was hoping for.
Other ideas always welcome.
