I have a 1996 K2500 with a 6.5 td, 4L80e transmission. I blew a head gasket, possible cracked head, I haven't pulled apart yet. I was thinking about dropping in a new 6.5 and rebuilt my existing to put into my rock crawler. Where is the best place to get a new 6.5L or a quality rebuilt unit? The truck has 204000 miles on it, would I be ok replacing head gaskets or heads if needed, and running the motor in my crawler or is that mileage to much in the bottom end?
My transmission was weak prior to the head gasket issue so I need to replace it at the same time. Where is a good place to get a tranny? Places around me want 3500 to rebuild. I haven't had a 4l80e before but compared to my TH400 that's really high.
I also have considered swapping in a manual tranny what are the pros and cons and is the swap difficult?
